The Shoot
I had been eyeing the weather for weeks approaching the day for this Stanley Park Engagement session. As the date got closer and closer the weather didn’t improve and I was worried we might have to reschedule. On the day of the shoot, the weather was beautiful and the sunset provided us with some stunning light!
One of my favourite times of day to shoot is sunset… and not just for the pretty skies! During sunset, the light comes in at an angle and creates long shadows, as a result there is a lot more shaded areas. When you shoot in the middle of the day and the sun is above the trees, it creates a speckled foliage behind the subject and the image starts to look very busy. At sunset there are so many objects blocking the sun (because it is coming in at an angle) and the shade is even and hardly any sun is speckling the background. Unfortunately it’s difficult to shoot at sunset in Canada for weddings (as the sun sets late in the summer months) so I always try to get that perfect lighting at the engagement session!
The Couple
Mike was in New York City for a few days on a business trip from Canada. He randomly met Izabela in front of Madison Square Garden and couldn’t get the beautiful stranger out of his head. Mike took a chance and asked Izabela on a date, knowing he would be leaving New York back to Winnipeg in a few days. One date turned into another and after three years they got tired of long distance and both moved to Vancouver. Mike proposed on top of Grouse Mountain, one of their spots they visited as tourists the year before. Stanley Park provided the perfect iconic backdrop for their Vancouver engagement session! Stanley Park has so many flowers out right now- the camellias, giant Azalea and cherry blossoms provided the perfect backdrop for this shoot.
Awesome photo session. From the expression to the photo quality.
